Introduction Area of interest in Western journals

Abstract

Chinese project management practices have been found of great interest for the western journals and different characteristics of Chinese project management has been researched. In this respect, this study has been carried out to review, analyze and compare 200 western journals to understand the basic concepts, ideas and theories used in those journals showing the interest of western journals. The selection of journals is made randomly and analysis is made using content analysis of literature review including evaluation, analysis and comparison of journals. The study has found eight major characteristics of Chinese project management while conclusion and recommendations are made to enhance the validity and reliability of the result. The study concludes that western journals are diverse in approaches and methodologies that are used to explain the research problems. Moreover, it is also found that there is difference in approaches of Anglo-American and Chinese authors to address the issues.

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1  Introduction

Project management in China extends from managing one project and group of project to program management, portfolio management that is closely related to the strategy of the company.  It is identified that over a past fifty years, the professional discipline of project management has become well established in the western business world, while there is no equivalent development of the project management in China (Chen& Partington, 2004).  Moreover, it is identified that western journals are focusing on the effective system approach of the Chinese project management about how Chinese analyzes the whole system, treating several fundamentals as inter-connected and utilizing intuitive synthesis.  The western journals are highlighting the portfolio management and program management characteristics of Chinese project management (Stawicki, 2007).  Considering the significance of project management practices in China for the westerns investors, it is important to find the key characteristics of Chinese project management. 1.2  Background

Despite being an underdeveloped country, China has found to stand out as the largest global market with huge and completely diversified population (Wolff, 2008). The recent developments and attributes of Chinese project management have been attracting number of potential investors at the global level (Sun, 2009). On the other hand, western investors have also been found taking great interest in the investment opportunities to capture the Chinese market through diverse trade options, partnerships, joint ventures and various other project areas. In addition to this, those potential investors including western individuals and corporations, who want to make investment in China requires a keen and thorough knowledge and understanding about the process of Chinese project management (Blackman, 1997).

According to Fan (1998), there is a lot of difference in the Chinese culture and the western culture that could be reflected from the business-working environment in the country. Likewise, it has also been observed that there has been an incredible increase in the foreign investment in various Chinese projects that might be the result of the innovative working style of Chinese managers, attracting the bulk of foreign investments from various western countries in to their homeland (Fan, 1998). On one hand, when the reasons behind such a tremendous increase in Chinese project management are the specific attributes of Chinese working conditions, on the other hand, the efforts made by the western academic journals could also not be underestimated (Selmer, 1999). The publications in these western journals have become the key source for the foreign investors to gain a complete understanding about the most profitable areas to invest in the global economy of China. 

1.3  Aims of Research

In the recent history of construction industry of China having a legacy of poor performance, significant progress has been made towards the adoption of commercial approach, which includes the introduction of western project management concepts and procedures. Chen, Qiang, and Wang (2009) depicted that despite the wide adoption of project management practices by construction companies along with the increasing recognition of the significance of project management as the main cause of the success of organizations, there are inadequate researches on the project management in the context of Chinese construction sector. According to Parry and Song (1994), the innovative ideas in China derived from marketplace are most possibly be successful as compared to the ideas derived from technical work. It was also observed in this study that Canada does not possess any kind of idea having higher potential to get successful. Furthermore, according to a study conducted by Mishra, Dongwook, and Dae (1996), it was observed that the two most important factors in the country are market intelligence, product– firm compatibility, and launch efforts; and China had represented great similarity in terms of relative importance of such factors. A survey of 142 and 470 product projects in USA and China was conducted by Calantone, Jeffrey, and Song (1996) and it was observed that there were differences in relative significance of success factors that were revealed by the cross– national comparison. Therefore, the fundamental aim of conducting the study is to identify the main interests of western journals in the Chinese project management practice as these western journals can help the western institutions and companies to carry out projects more smoothly in China. This study summarizes and analyzes the development and evolution of western journals about project management in China over the past 20 years. 

1.4  Research Objectives

The main objective of the research is to review 200 western journals to identify the key areas of interest in western journals in the Chinese project management practice. In this respect, the objectives are as follows:

  • To identify the key theories, concepts and ideas found in the western journals regarding Chinese project management practice
  • To find the main questions, problems that have been addressed to date in western journals
  • To find the knowledge and information on the organized and structured topic 
  • To find the origin and definitions of the topic in the western journals
  •  To find and discuss the political standpoint of the journal
  • To find and discuss the major issues and debates about the topic
  • To find the key sources of the information used in the journals
  • To find the way approaches used in the journals to answer the questions have increased the knowledge and understanding
  • To compare and contrast the disagreements on one point among authors of journals
  • To find and compare the methods used by authors disagreeing on specific points
  • To assess the strengths and weaknesses of the western journals regarding Chinese project management practices
  • To compare the Anglo-American authors with Chinese authors in the context of their approaches used to address the issues in the Chinese project management

1.5  Scope of Research

The scope of this study is to analyze the major areas of interest in western journals in project management of China. The importance of the study lies in the fact that China has gained the most strengthened and highlighted position in the economic progression globally and western companies have always been showing very profound interest in economic growth, business industry as well as project management practice. However, holding experience in project management in the west is absolutely an asset but western companies are found to be more focused and inclined towards Chinese business industry. Since, China has showed a very rapid economic growth in past years that has altered China from an under developing country to a developed country and proved its position in the global competition, the scope of the study is concerned to analyze the areas of Chinese project management and business industry in which western journals are mostly interested. This study extends to a structured evaluation of the main project management and business journals over the past two decades as well as content study related to the Chinese project management on a number of areas.

1.6  Research Limitation

There is several research limitations related to the research conducted in the paper along with the scope of the study.  Hence, it is significant to recognize the limitations associated to the research study.  In the research study only 200 western journals are taken for the content analysis of the Chinese project management however, larger number of business journals could enable a deeper study of the research topic.  The research is conducted on the limited areas of the Chinese management characteristics due to the time constraints as well as difficulty in the collection of data. Furthermore, less research is conducted on the theories related to Chinese project management due to time constraints however; greater extent on the research could be beneficial for the deeper understanding of the research topic.  Moreover, content analysis of the research was extremely time-consuming and usually caused increased error to achieve higher level of interpretation of the content.  Moreover, due to time restriction less study is conducted on political system, governmental guidance, Chinese culture, and economic law. 

1.7  Summary of Contents

Chapter One: Introduction

            The paper is structured to start with the introduction chapter containing study background, aims and objectives of research, scope and limitation of the research and summary of contents and conclusion. This chapter of the paper highlights key fundamental points of the research providing the reasons to conduct the study.     

Chapter Two: Methodology

            The second chapter is methodology chapter, which is aimed at indicating the research methodology to be used in the paper. The selection of the research methodology is based on the literature and justification while enhancing the significance of the selected methodology of the paper. 

Chapter Three: Literature Review, Main Content and Critical Analysis

            The third chapter of the paper presents the main content and literature review related to research study that is critically analyzed to achieve the objectives of the paper. In this view, the chapter analyzes 200 westerns journals about the key areas of the project management practice in China. Besides, 200 western journals are compared on the point of the approaches used by Chinese and Anglo-American authors to find the difference between Chinese and Anglo-American authors in addressing the key issue regarding project management practice in China.

Chapter Four: Discussion

            The chapter four is the discussion chapter, which is aimed at discussing the key areas of interest in western journals regarding Chinese project management. Moreover, the chapter also shows the integrant data analysis of 200 western journals, which demonstrates the frequency of occurrence of different characteristics of Chinese project management in western journals’ articles.

Chapter Five: Conclusion

            The conclusion is the fifth chapter of the paper containing limitations of western journals resulted in missing areas of consideration by the authors accompanied with the limitations of the research conducted to identify the key areas of interest of western journals in the project management practice in China. Furthermore, recommendations for the future research are suggested based on the limitations of the current study. 

1.8  Conclusion

This chapter presents the introduction of the topic, research problem, and background, aims of the study, research objectives, and scope of the research, research limitations, and summary and of the contents. The research problem of the paper is identified as to find the key areas of interest in the western journals in the Chinese project management practice. With this regard, the background of the research shows the emerging position of China in the world economy and growing interest of the western investors in the project management practice of China. The objectives of research show numbers of objectives to be achieved through content analysis of the literature review. Moreover, scope and limitation discussed the area of study while limitations determine the boundaries of the study. The summary of contents presented the structure of the paper illustrating the key points of each chapter and flow chart of the working of the research to demonstrate how each step is processed in the paper.

The next chapter is the methodology chapter, which aims to present the selection of appropriate research methodology including research strategy, research purpose and research approach. Other significant parts include the type of data, difficulties encountered in using the selected methodology, limitations of research methodology, data collection and data analysis methods.
